New toolkit for urban improvement and sustainability

The government is investing 85 million euros in the Dutch Metropolitan Innovations (DMI) ecosystem. The investment is for mobility renewal and smart, sustainable urbanization. Technolution Move is part of a consortium led by Amsterdam that is claiming a portion of these funds. The consortium consists of the cities of Almere and Groningen, technology parties Goudappel/DAT.mobility and ViaNova, and the research institutes AMS Institute and TNO. The Dutch private sector is contributing another 42 million.

Mobility, public space and housing

The DMI ecosystem provides the domains of mobility, public space and house construction with new tools from the digital world. With these, cities can improve their functionality and make them more sustainable. Urban areas are experiencing increasing pressure on public space. A city like Amsterdam has nearly 900,000 inhabitants and welcomes millions of tourists each year. At the same time, the population is growing and the available space is shrinking. Therefore, cities want to strengthen their tools. This will allow them to manage the use of public space better.

Predicting and managing use of space and mobility behavior

The cities in the consortium are looking for ways to create value for users of public space. For example, with clear digital communication about the various functions of the space. With the right tools, the use of space can be predicted and steered. For example, certain types of vehicles can be allowed or denied access, possibly linked to permits and exemptions. Instruments also make it easier to model measures and target groups in order to effectively influence mobility behavior.

Public-private cooperation in DMI ecosystem

The investment in the DMI ecosystem fits within the current coalition’s ambitions for climate, housing and mobility. The ecosystem is a public-private partnership that invests in intelligent applications, knowledge building and trusted data access between different parties. The DMI ecosystem is a collaboration of the business community, knowledge institutes, G40 and G4 municipalities, provinces and the Ministries of I&W and BZK under a joint Uniform Agreement System.
